Why Choose a Professional Spray Finish for Your Fitted Furniture?
When you invest in bespoke fitted furniture, you naturally spend time thinking about the design.
How should the wardrobes be laid out? How much hanging space do you need? Would drawers work better than shelves? Should your alcove units have Shaker doors or something more contemporary?
But there is another decision that can make a huge difference to how your finished furniture looks and feels:
How is it going to be painted?
At New Creation Joinery, we design and build bespoke fitted furniture for homes throughout Leeds and the surrounding areas, including fitted wardrobes, alcove units, media units, boot rooms and custom storage.
For painted furniture, one of the best ways to achieve a high-quality finish is to have it professionally spray finished.
It isn't simply about applying paint with a spray gun. The preparation before spraying and the sanding between coats are every bit as important.
Done properly, the result is furniture with beautifully smooth faces, crisp details and edges that feel just as good as they look.
A Smooth Finish Without Brush or Roller Marks
Probably the most obvious advantage of professionally sprayed furniture is the finish you get across large, flat surfaces.
When paint is applied using a brush, even a skilled decorator can leave some degree of brush texture. Rollers can also leave a subtle stippled effect.
That isn't necessarily a problem when you're painting walls, skirting boards or traditional joinery, but on a large fitted wardrobe door those little details can become much more noticeable.
Professional spraying atomises the coating into a fine, controlled application, helping to produce an extremely smooth and consistent surface.
This can be particularly effective on:
Fitted wardrobe doors
Shaker-style cupboards
Flat slab doors
Media units
Alcove cabinetry
Drawer fronts
Built-in storage
Large end panels
When light falls across a large wardrobe or cabinet door, there are no obvious brush marks running across the surface. Instead, you get the clean, uniform appearance people tend to associate with professionally manufactured furniture.
The Difference Is in the MDF Edges
This is one of the areas where professional preparation really earns its keep.
MDF is a fantastic material for creating painted fitted furniture. It machines well, provides an excellent surface for paint and allows us to create everything from simple slab doors to more detailed Shaker designs.
However, the cut edge of MDF is very different to the smooth factory face.
Once MDF has been cut, those edges are more porous and can become slightly furry or rough when coating is applied.
Simply painting over them doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
You've probably seen painted MDF before where the front looks reasonably smooth but, when you run your finger along the edge, it feels noticeably rougher.
That isn't the finish we want on a piece of bespoke furniture.
With a professional finishing process, the MDF is properly prepared and the edges receive the attention they need. After the appropriate primer or coating is applied, surfaces can be carefully sanded and prepared again before subsequent coats.
That process helps remove raised fibres and tiny imperfections rather than simply burying them under more paint.
The finished edge can then become beautifully smooth to the touch.
It is a relatively small detail, but it's one of those details you immediately notice when you open a wardrobe door or run your hand across a piece of well-made furniture.
Sanding Between Coats Makes a Big Difference
One common misconception is that a professional spray finish is simply the result of using better spraying equipment.
The spray gun is only part of the story.
Preparation between coats is just as important as the final coat itself.
As primers and finishes dry, very small imperfections or raised fibres can appear. Carefully sanding or denibbing the surface between the appropriate coats creates a smoother base for the next stage.
Each stage builds on the previous one.
Rather than expecting one thick coat of paint to hide every imperfection, the finish is gradually built up until the doors, panels and edges have the smooth appearance we're looking for.
It's a more involved process, but you can see — and feel — the difference in the finished furniture.
A Consistent Finish Across the Whole Installation
A bespoke fitted wardrobe isn't one single piece of material.
A large installation might include six doors, several drawer fronts, end panels, plinths, filler panels, shelves and decorative details.
They all need to look like parts of the same piece of furniture.
Professional spraying makes it possible to create a much more consistent appearance across those different components.
The colour, texture and sheen can remain uniform from one door to the next, helping the completed installation look clean and cohesive.
That's particularly important with large runs of cabinetry where several doors sit directly alongside each other. Small differences in paint texture can become much more obvious when they're side by side.
Perfect for Modern Flat Slab Doors
We create fitted furniture in lots of different styles, but professional spraying works particularly well with modern flat slab doors.
Their simplicity is also what makes the quality of the finish so important.
There is nowhere for a poor paint finish to hide.
A large, completely flat door reflects light across its entire surface, which means brush marks, roller texture and poorly prepared areas can stand out.
A smooth spray finish complements the clean lines of this style of furniture and helps achieve that minimalist, contemporary appearance.
Ideal for Shaker-Style Furniture Too
At the other end of the design spectrum, we also build plenty of Shaker-style wardrobes and alcove cupboards.
Here, the challenge is slightly different.
Rather than one large flat surface, a Shaker door has rails, stiles, edges, recessed areas and internal corners.
Professional spraying allows paint to be applied consistently across these different elements without relying on a brush to work paint into every detail.
Combined with good preparation, it helps retain the clean, crisp appearance that makes Shaker furniture so timeless.
A Durable Finish for Furniture That Gets Used Every Day
Your fitted furniture isn't going to sit behind a rope in a showroom.
It's going to be used.
Wardrobe doors might be opened several times every day. Boot room cupboards have to cope with busy family life. Alcove cabinets, children's bedroom furniture and media units all get touched, opened, closed and cleaned regularly.
That's why the coating used on furniture matters too.
There are professional coating systems specifically designed for furniture, MDF and interior joinery. Depending on the particular system specified, these can offer characteristics such as good scratch resistance, abrasion resistance and resistance to everyday household use.
It is worth making an important distinction here:
Spraying on its own does not automatically make paint more durable.
Durability comes from using an appropriate coating system, preparing the substrate correctly and applying that system properly.
Put all those things together and you can achieve a finish designed for the demands of fitted furniture rather than simply applying ordinary wall paint to a cabinet.
Easier to Keep Looking Smart
Another benefit of achieving such a smooth surface is everyday maintenance.
Dust and fingerprints have fewer tiny surface imperfections to settle into, while an appropriate furniture coating can be wiped down when necessary.
That's particularly useful on:
Children's fitted wardrobes
Boot room storage
Hallway furniture
Media cabinets
Dressing tables
Frequently used cupboard doors
Of course, painted furniture still needs to be treated with reasonable care, but starting with a high-quality smooth finish certainly helps it continue looking smart.
Consistent Colour Throughout Your Furniture
Choosing bespoke painted furniture also gives you far more control over how the finished piece works with the rest of your room.
Professional furniture coating systems can offer a huge choice of colours, allowing the cabinetry to become part of your overall interior design rather than looking like something that has simply been added afterwards.
You might choose a soft neutral for fitted wardrobes in a bedroom, a dark statement colour for a media wall, or something that closely complements your existing wall colour.
Depending on the coating system being used, different sheen levels may also be available, allowing you to choose anything from a subtle low-sheen finish to something with a little more lustre.
For a truly bespoke piece of furniture, that flexibility is a big advantage.
It Can Make Bespoke Furniture Look Even More Bespoke
There is something slightly contradictory about poorly painting beautifully made furniture.
You can spend hours designing the perfect wardrobes and carefully manufacture every component to fit an awkward bedroom perfectly, but if the finish has rough edges and obvious paint marks, that's what you'll notice.
With a professional spray finish, the coating complements the craftsmanship underneath it.
Crisp doors.
Smooth drawer fronts.
Consistent panels.
Beautifully prepared edges.
Clean Shaker detailing.
An even colour across the complete installation.
These individual details combine to give the furniture a much more refined appearance.
Sprayed Furniture Versus Hand-Painted Furniture – Which Is Better?
There is absolutely a place for traditional hand-painted furniture.
In certain interiors, subtle brush texture can even be part of the character you're trying to achieve, and a very experienced decorator can produce an excellent hand-painted finish.
However, if what you're looking for is a very smooth, contemporary, furniture-quality appearance, professional spraying has some clear advantages.
For New Creation Joinery's style of bespoke fitted furniture, the qualities we're usually looking for are:
A smooth surface
No obvious brush marks
Consistent colour
Well-finished MDF edges
Crisp detailing
An even sheen
A finish suitable for everyday furniture
When that's the brief, professional spray finishing is difficult to beat.

It's a Finish You Can Feel as Well as See
Photographs are great for showing the overall design of bespoke furniture, but sometimes they don't capture the details that really demonstrate its quality.
One of my favourite things about a properly finished piece of furniture is simply running your hand over it.
You can feel the difference.
There's no furry MDF edge.
There's no heavy ridge of paint around a corner.
There's no coarse roller texture across the door.
Instead, the doors, edges and panels have that beautifully smooth feeling that tells you somebody has taken their time over the finishing process.
When you're having something made specifically for your home, I think those details matter.
