New Creation Joinery: Crafting A Classic Mid-century Wardrobe in Leeds
At New Creation Joinery, we love a challenge, especially when it involves creating something unique and personal for our customers. Our latest bedroom furniture project brought a touch of midcentury elegance into a modern home in Leeds, blending classic design with contemporary features. The customer came to us with a photograph of a vintage fitted wardrobe that they adored, asking if we could replicate the look while adding our own twist. We were thrilled to take on this bespoke project, channelling the timeless style into a fresh, functional piece.
The Design Journey
The original photograph featured a beautifully crafted midcentury wardrobe with distinctive hand-carved handles. Our customer was particularly drawn to these details and wanted to capture the same essence in their custom wardrobe. We took inspiration from the photo and began sketching out ideas, focusing on merging the old with the new.
Here's the photo our customer presented asking us to create a similar look.
Hand-Carved Sapele Handles
One of the standout features of this project was the hand-carved handles. These are the handles I hand carved out of sapele wood, chosen for its rich, warm tones and durability. I meticulously replicated the design from the photograph, ensuring every curve and line honored the original. After carving, the handles were lacquered to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and provide a durable, lasting finish.
Modern Internal Twist
While the exterior of the wardrobe paid homage to midcentury design, the interior offered a modern surprise. We used a clean, white laminate for the interior, creating a bright and fresh contrast to the solid oak doors. The fitted wardrobe also featured curved drawer fronts, adding a soft, contemporary touch. The drawer boxes were finished in an anthracite hue, complementing the sleek, modern aesthetic and providing a striking visual contrast to the white laminate.
Solid Oak Doors
The wardrobe doors were crafted from solid oak, chosen for its timeless appeal and durability. To enhance the wood's natural grain and warmth, we applied a stain followed by a lacquer finish. This process not only highlighted the beauty of the oak but also protected the wood, ensuring the wardrobe will be a beloved fixture in our customer's home for years to come.
The Final Touch
Seeing their new bespoke fitted wardrobe, our customer was overjoyed. It was a perfect blend of the old and the new, a piece that not only fulfilled their vision but also offered practicality and modern conveniences. The hand-carved sapele handles, in particular, were a standout feature, adding a personal and artisanal touch to the piece.
At New Creation Joinery, we pride ourselves on bringing our customers' visions to life with craftsmanship and care. This midcentury fitted wardrobe project was a testament to the quality of our handmade bedroom furniture. We look forward to many more projects where we can combine classic inspirations with modern innovations, creating beautiful, bespoke pieces for our customers.
